Peter Clemon Outten

The subject of this sketch was the descendent of Captain Abraham Outten, who, was the youngest son of John Outten, the Pioneer. Peter Clemon Outten was born May 29, 1816 in Worcester County, Md., and he married Sallie J. Gootie; who was born April 14, 1822, and they were the parents of eleven children.

The children of Peter C. who are mentioned in. his will are, William T. Elizabeth Bonneville, Julious C, Anna Brittingham, Edward B. Hiram B. Lloyd J. and Eurah M. Outten. and the grandchildren mentioned in the will are Peter T. Outten, Taylor Outten, Zillie Redden, and Sallie O. Redden. Judging by the will he made, and, what the writer had heard of him, Peter C. Outten had some wealth for that day, and it is said that he gave each one of his children a farm.

Peter C. had a brother named Revel Outten. He married Evelyn Payne November 3, 1841. He also married Wealthy J. Mason, October 14, 1851. But the writer could not find any other account of him in the records at Snow Hill. He probably lived in some other section, as the family lost sight of him for many years. The parents of these two sons are unknown, but the writer is sure they are in the Captain Abraham Outten line. He had a son named Abraham Jr., then there was a Levin Outten who was in the Revoluntionary War. He received a commission as an ensign August 30, 1777. with the Wicomico battalion of militia. This high office paid $16.00 a month. There was also a widow who had two sons, named James and John, but they could not be traced any further in any of the old records that were available. One of these or some other was the father of Peter C. and Revel Outten.

The inventory of Lloyd J. Outten, son of Peter C. was dated Oct. 12, 1922. Allen E. Outten was his administrator and it was a dividend account, so was not reported back to the court.

Thomas H. Outten son of Peter C. married Sadie V. but they had no children. His will was made February 16, 1927, and executed October 18, 1931.

William T. Outten married Lillie, and they were the parents of a daughter named Nellie who married a Guthery. William died September 2. 1934, and his inventory only mentions a car.

Peter Taylor Outten married Ida E. and he died in 1875. Peter C. was his administrator. His inventory is dated September 6, 1875. Peter C. was also the administrator for Ida E. and her will is dated February 18, 1888.

Of John L. Outten, son of Peter C. the writer has no information except a brief inventory found at Snow Hill, Maryland.

The will of Mary P, Outten, wife of William T. was made December 20, 1888. Clayton J. Purnell was her administrator. The children were Mary E. Redden, wife of John Redden. also, Sarah E. Indiana, Victoria, Larie, Oscar, and Susanna Outten. The will was probated August 13, 1889.

The will of Lenard Outten is dated May 2, 1917. His wife Ida V. was Executrix, and the will was probated September 1, 1931.

The writer copied these sketches from the records at Snow Hill, Maryland, and, they were, or may be descendents of Peter C. Outten, but there is no proof that they are.

It is said the Peter C. had seven sons and three daughters, but he had two sons named Julious C. but only one of them is mentioned in the will.

  1. Thomas had four sons, Oscar - ----------
  2. Julious C. four sons, Charles, Alton, Willis and Julious Carl. Twin boys also. Julious Carl and William H.
  3. Edward B. two sons and two daughters.
  4. Taylor,.two sons, Taylor.C - --------
  5. Hiram B., one son Clemon.
  6. Lloyd, no children mentioned.
  7. John, two boys, Earl and Johnie.
  1. Elizabeth, married Washington Bonnewell.
  2. Eurah, married Elijah Brittingham.
  3. Annie, married Charles Hill.

Julious C. Outten was a son of Peter C. and he was born about the year 1851. He married 1st married Mary Ann Smullins and 2nd married Fanny F. and they were the parents of four sons, Charles, Alton, Willis and Carl. He made his will February l7, 1925, and it is recorded at Snow Hill Maryland. The will was probated March 19, 192?, and it is probable that he died that year. It was said the Julious C. had two sons named Julious C. but only one of them was living when the will was made. He was an old man when he lost his wife, and his children were all grown, but in his old age he married a young women, and, when he was seventy-five years old he became the father of twin boys, whose names the writer does not know. He does not know, how many children were left orphans when Julious C. died. Twins Julius and Wm. Hiram called Peter.

In 1891, the writer was appointed the pastor of three Churches in Accomac County, Va., and he expected to make his headquarters at New Church, about six miles from Pocomoke City. At that time the Pennsylvania Rail Road Co., gave tickets to all ministers of the Gospel, who applied for them. If they needed them for use in their Church work. With that ticket in hand the fare was one third less. I knew I would have to use the rail road so I requested to company to send my ticket to New Church, Virginia.

But time passed and my ticket did not arrive or reach me. So I asked to Post Master if a letter had been sent to his office for me. He said he had received a letter, and had given it to Julious C. Hooten. This is what they called Julious in Virginia. So, the next time I saw Julious in town I boned him about the letter. He said he opened the letter thinking it was his. That letter was addressed The Rev. J. P. Outten, and his initials were Julious C. and he said that Rev. "don't mean nothing no how". He said the last time he saw the ticket, it was on top of his pile of wheat in the barn. So I borrowed a horse & carriage and went to see Julious. He was tall and straight and he wore a long black beard. But I was more impressed with his kindness and his friendly manner. Of course the letter was gladly returned with many unnecessary appologies.

Julious C. was the only son of Peter C. whom the writer ever knew., but in 1932, he found a son of Julious, at Stockton, Maryland. I knew two of his granddaughters, who lived at Girdletree, Maryland. Mary and Annie if I remember correctly, one was married and the other was a Nurse.

Hiram B. Outten was a son of Peter C. He was born in 1860. and died in 1935. He married Emma Tilghman and their children were Goldie, Clemon W. and Ruby, who married a Lambertson. Clemon's children are: Madeline Watson, Audrey Kensey, and Clemon Jr., Clemon was born in 1889, and he married Sallie Landing. Hiram B. made his will in March 21, 1914 and it was probated March 6, 1935. The writer received a letter from Mrs Clemon W. Outten of Pocomoke, City on January 19, 1917 in which she gave the names of some members of her family as follows: Clemon W. Outten, Sallie E. Outten, Madeline E. Outten, Mrs Washington Bonnewell, Mrs Elijah E. Brittingham, and Mrs Charles C. Hill. She also stated that she could not find the family Bible, and, that she had given this much information but it does not enable us to write a complete history of the Clemon W. Outten family. It is said that Clemon W. Outten family owns the Outten theatre in Snow Hill, and that he has several farms.

Edward B. Outten was a son of Peter C. and he was born June 28, 1855. His wife Mary Jane was born February 14, 1861, and they were the parents of four children. Lola married Fred Mc Daniel, Edna married Harry Howard. Vernon married Annie Mae Fader.

Hiram J. Outten is a son of Edward B. and he was born September 8, 1884. He was married to Delma W. Reed. September l6, 1908. She was born April 18, 1881. and they were the parents of four children; one son and three daughters;

Edward H. Outten son of Hiram J. was born February 17, 1910. He married Esther McClarick and they are the parents of one child named Barbara. They live at New Castle, Delaware. and he is a policeman on the Delaware highway.

Cleors M. Outten was born April 20, 1912. She married Leroy Murray December 24, 1931. There children are Alden B. and Mary K.

Elizabeth B. Outten was born June 12, 1916, she married Lewis Plummer May 8, 1938, they have one child Elizabeth Elaine.

Mary Amanda Outten was born March 17, 1921, she married Clifford Rust August 1939. They have three sons.

Hiram J. Outten has been a farmer most of his life and he has lived at Milton since 1924. He has been an invalid since February 2. 1950, but we hope and pray for his speedy recovery.

The writer has typed this memoir of Peter C. Outten from sketches that he made in the record office at Snow Hill, some thirty years ago, and he had a long list of names of persons whom he thought were descendents of Peter C. but he will not give them, as there is no proof. His descendents are very numerous for it has been one of the most prolific family's in keeping up the family name(OUTTEN). It is the only Outten family known to the writer that now gives promise of perpetuating the name for many years to come.

Sallie J. wife of Peter C. died November 22, 1881, and he probably married again as his widows name was Ida C. Peter C. died April 13, 1888, His will is recorded at Snow Hill, Maryland.
